Astronomical collection
Astronomical Collection at the Institute of Astrophysics and University Observatory
After the astronomical discoveries around the year 1800 (e.g. several minor planets in the solar system) and successes of astronomers of the Gotha court, Carl August, Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, decided to establish an astronomical observatory in Jena.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was in charge to oversee the construction.
The first observatory in 1813 was an annex to the former garden house of Friedrich Schiller (died 1805).
The astronomical collection was established with instruments that were given to the observatory by the Weimar court around that time, namely a Newtonian telescope in Herschel's mounting, a comet searcher from Utzschneider and Fraunhofer and an astronomical pendulum clock from Vulliamy of London.
Under the directorship of Ernst Abbe towards the end of the 19th century, a universal instrument, two astronomical pendulum clocks from Glashütte, a theodolite, and several mirror prism circles were added for education and research.
Particularly valuable objects of today's astronomical collection are also a several centuries old star chart from Korea, based on ancient Chinese sources, two star charts with new Christian constellation by Julius Schiller from the Early Modern Period (1627), and the first Daguerreotype of a solar eclipse 1851.
