Geophysical / seismological instruments

This vast and unique collection of worldwide renown contains instruments for measuring the movement of the Earth. The collection is overseen by geophysicists from the Geodynamic Observatory Moxa and staff from the Department of General Geophysics at Friedrich Schiller University Jena. From 1900 onwards, earthquake research became a national and international discipline prompting scientists to develop and build the necessary measuring instruments. The collection is on display at Museum Burg Ranis. Most of its objects were designed between 1900 and 1980. The collection continues to grow as measuring instruments replaced for newer equipment at the Geodynamic Observatory Moxa are added.
