Seismology

Sieberg Seismology Archive

In 1924, August Sieberg (1875–1945) was appointed as a geophysicist at Friedrich Schiller University Jena. From 1933 onwards, he was in charge of the German Reich's headquarters for earthquake research (Reichszentrale für Erdbebenforschung) in Jena. Besides being one of the most avid researchers in the field of geosciences, he had great artistic talent.

The collection includes printed academic works and handwritten manuscripts. Most noteworthy are his notebooks, a vast collection of academic correspondences, and diaries of his field trips.

Apart from photographs, the collection also includes small and large pictures that Sieberg painted on paper and glass covering many areas of applied geosciences such as volcanology, geology, seismology, and meteorology. This collection not only documents the activities of an important geoscientist, it also offers a well of inspiration for research in the fields of geosciences and the history of science.
