Herbarium Haussknecht

Herbarium Haussknecht (JE)

The Herbarium Haussknecht is home to about 3.5 million dried and pressed plants mounted on paper sheets. Together with the herbaria in Berlin and Munich, it is among the three largest of its kind in Germany. Of particular international importance are the collections of bryophytes and Cuban plants. In addition to the plant specimens, fruits and seeds as well as the estates of many botanists are curated. The collection’s main geographical focus is on Thuringia, South-Eastern Europe, West Asia and Cuba. Associated with the collection is one of Germany’s most comprehensive botanical libraries partly dating back to the 16th century, it is administrated by the Thuringian University and State Library. Traditionally, the Herbarium Haussknecht is also the headquarters of the Thuringian botanical association Thüringische Botanische Gesellschaft e. V.
