Der Begriff rūband ist ein Kompositum aus den Wörter rū ('Gesicht') und band ('Band') und bezeichnet eine bestimmte Art des Gesichtsschleiers, die von iranischen Frauen vom 17. bis ins frühe 20. Jahrhundert getragen wurde. Die sogenannte klassische Version des rūband bestand aus einem weißen rechteckigen Tuch mit Augenschlitzen, das über dem Kopfschleier getragen, und am Hinterkopf durch einen Knoten oder eine Klemme zusammengehalten wurde. Pers. چادر  čādur. Der čādur ist ein Überwurf, der von Frauen für das islamische Gebet getragen wird. Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde er auch als Kleidungsstück außerhalb des Hauses getragen. Er bestand aus zwei Stoffbahnen, die an der Webkante zusammengenäht wurden, manchmal wurden zwei Bänder angenäht, durch die man den čādur am Hinterkopf zusammenbinden konnte. Das Material ließ auf die soziale Herkunft der Trägerin schließen: Frauen der Mittel- und Oberklassen trugen dunkel gefärbte čādur, während die der ärmeren Schichten aus blauem Stoff bestanden.
