Anatomical Collection—Museum anatomicum Jenense

The anatomical collection of the Medical Faculty is one of the most valuable collections of the university in terms of both medical and cultural history. It was founded over 200 years ago by the physician Justus Christian Loder.

The collection conveys important testimony to medical education. It also documents the changes in the production of anatomical models and provides a historical overview of conservation methodology. The cultural and historical significance of the collection stems from the so-called "premaxillary specimens" which are a focal point of the collection; they remind us of the comparative anatomical studies by Johann Wolfgang Goethe.

The anatomical collection comprises an extensive collection of teaching specimens, which are displayed according to organ systems and serve both basic and continuing medical education of students and staff.
