Als Khan ('Karawanserei') werden Gebäude bezeichnet, die Händlern mit ihren Waren eine Unterkunft boten. Es gab große, repräsentative Anlagen, die oft Teil von imperialen Stiftungen waren, aber auch sehr einfache Gebäude, in denen Haussknecht oft übernachtet hat. Die städtischen Khane, zum Beispiel in Aleppo, hatten zusäzliche Funktionen, etwa als Warenlager, Residenz der europäischen Händler und Konsuln und Sitz der Zollbehörden. (SK)
