Viele dieser Tells waren mehrere Jahrtausende besiedelt, waren aber zu Haussknechts Zeiten schon lange aufgegeben. Einige bedeutende Ausgrabungsstätten befinden sich in der ʿUmq-Ebene, wie Tell Tayinat oder Tell Açana, die vom 3. bis zum 1. Jahrtausend v.u.Z. besiedelt waren. (SK)

Belkis, das antike Zeugma am Euphrat. Sicherlich der strategischen Bedeutung dieses Ortes an den Handelswegen nach Osten und des Euphratüberganges Rechnung tragend, wurde im 1. Jahrhundert u.Z. eine römische Legion nach Zeugma verlegt. Dieses unterstützte die Entwicklung der Stadt, so dass sie gegen 200 u.Z. eine der Metropolen des Reiches wurde, von dieser Zeit zeugen die Villen, deren Mosaikdekoration heute im Museum von Gaziantep bewundert werden kann. Etwa ein Jahrhundert später, bedingt durch die Kriege gegen die Perser und die Verlegung der Garnison weiter nach Osten, war die Blüte bereits beendet (Kennedy, David. „The Twin Towns and the Region“. Belkis, das antike Zeugma am Euphrat. Sicherlich der strategischen Bedeutung dieses Ortes an den Handelswegen nach Osten und des Euphratüberganges Rechnung tragend, wurde im 1.
