Mineralogical collection

Mineralogical collection

Discover some of the most ancient rocks of the Earth at the University’s Mineralogical Collection. Founded in 1779, it is one of the oldest and largest collections at a German university. The rocks, some of which are very beautifully coloured, include minerals from the Triassic period found around Jena, but also come from sites around the world. The collection also boasts a considerable number of meteorites and tektites, the most important of which is a pallasite, which was found as far back as 1749.

The permanent collection, which is complemented by temporary exhibitions, also features a UV cabinet. The ultraviolet rays illuminate minerals so that they glow in the dark in fabulous colours.
